Dr. Koichi Tanji, ND, LMHC, CISSN, FMAPS

Naturopathic Physician | Licensed Mental Health Counselor | Assistant Professor | Certified Sports Nutritionist | Founder, Sphosh Health

Dr. Koichi Tanji is a dual-licensed Naturopathic Doctor (ND) and Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC) specializing in integrative and holistic psychiatry, with a clinical focus on addressing mental health through both physiological and psychological pathways. He is also a Fellow of the Medical Academy of Pediatric Special Needs (FMAPS) and a Certified Sports Nutritionist (CISSN), bringing a systems-based, performance-informed perspective to mental health care.

Dr. Tanji treats mental health conditions including anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, mood disorders, trauma-related conditions, stress-related syndromes, insomnia, burnout, and adjustment disorders, as well as complex neuropsychiatric and neurodevelopmental presentations such as autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, PANS/PANDAS, cognitive decline, chronic fatigue, mold-related illness, and screen addiction. His clinical approach emphasizes identifying and addressing underlying contributors to mental health symptoms, including metabolic health, inflammation, immune dysregulation, gut–brain signaling, sleep physiology, hormonal balance, and nutritional status.

Clinically, Dr. Tanji integrates psychotherapy, lifestyle and behavioral interventions, targeted nutrition, exercise physiology, and functional medicine strategies to support mental and neurological health. He also prescribes and manages psychiatric medications when clinically indicated, using them judiciously as part of a comprehensive treatment plan rather than as the sole intervention. This dual-lens model allows him to address both neurobiological processes and psychological patterns, tailoring care to each individual’s biology, lived experience, and goals.

In selected cases, Dr. Tanji utilizes advanced clinical tools such as lipid replacement therapy (LRT), immune system optimization strategies, and advanced diagnostic testing to support neurological repair, cognitive resilience, immune balance, and healthy aging, always guided by scientific evidence and patient safety.

In addition to clinical practice, Dr. Tanji serves as an Assistant Professor at Bastyr University, where he teaches biochemistry, psychology, and nutrition to graduate-level students. His academic background includes an AS in Exercise and Sports Science and a BS in Human Nutrition, providing a strong foundation in human metabolism, cellular physiology, and performance health.

With earlier professional experience in sports nutrition and personal training, Dr. Tanji applies principles of exercise science, recovery physiology, and performance optimization to both athletes and non-athletes, recognizing the critical role physical health plays in emotional regulation and cognitive function.

Dr. Tanji’s work is recognized internationally, and he actively collaborates with clinics and research initiatives in Japan and Europe to expand access to advanced integrative and cellular regenerative approaches. He is also engaged in cross-border innovation, developing educational platforms, wellness programs, and science-driven supplement brands for clients in the U.S. and abroad.

Across clinical care, academia, and international collaboration, Dr. Tanji’s work reflects a commitment to scientific rigor, clinical responsibility, and whole-person mental health care, approaching psychiatric symptoms as expressions of interacting biological, psychological, and environmental factors rather than isolated diagnoses.
