Few experiences are more frightening for a family than watching a child change almost overnight — sudden anxiety, obsessive behaviors, irritability or tics that seem to appear from nowhere. PANS and PANDAS are terms used to describe this pattern of abrupt or episodic neuropsychiatric changes, and understanding them is the first step toward getting the right help.
What the terms mean
PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal infections. PANS — Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome — is a broader term that includes sudden-onset cases with triggers other than strep. In both, the defining feature is a sudden or dramatic onset of symptoms.
Signs families notice
- Abrupt onset of obsessive-compulsive behaviors or severe anxiety;
- Sudden mood swings, irritability or emotional regression;
- Tics or unusual movements;
- Changes in handwriting, eating, sleep or attention;
- Symptoms that flare and recede, often after illness.
Because these symptoms overlap with other conditions, careful, professional evaluation is essential — both to identify what is happening and to rule out other causes.
Why an integrative lens is valuable
PANS and PANDAS sit at the intersection of immune function, infection and neuropsychiatric symptoms. That is exactly the kind of whole-body picture an integrative provider is trained to consider — looking at the immune and physiological context alongside the behavioral and emotional symptoms, and coordinating care rather than treating each piece in isolation.
At Sphosh Health, Dr. Koichi Tanji brings specialized training relevant to complex pediatric and neurodevelopmental presentations, and care is always individualized and provider-led. You can read more about our providers and our PANS / PANDAS focus.
How support is approached
There is no one-size-fits-all protocol. Thoughtful care begins with a thorough history and assessment, considers the underlying contributors, and builds a plan that supports the child and family over time. The emphasis is on careful evaluation, clear communication and coordinated, measured care.
For worried families
If your child has experienced a sudden, out-of-character change in behavior, you are right to take it seriously — and you are not overreacting by seeking answers. A professional evaluation can bring clarity and a path forward.
